Junior Ranger Spelunker

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Our first full day in New Mexico started with saying goodbye to the Carlsbad KOA (phew, no rattlesnake sightings we were warned about) and heading south to Carlsbad Caverns. To enter the caverns, you can hike 1.25 miles down a trail of switchbacks or take the elevator. We chose to hike the 75 stories down which was absolutely amazing. From stalactites and stalagmites, to soda straws, popcorn and tapestry (all rock formations), we were overwhelmed by the beauty and magic around every corner.

Maggie completed the Junior Ranger tasks which included interviewing a ranger. We met Ranger Morgan who is actually from Maryland and used to work at Assateague and Prince William Parks. Small world. From word searches, scavenger hunts, mazes and writing, Maggie completed the tasks and was officially sworn in as a Junior Ranger of Carlsbad. Badge and certificate included.

White Sands National Park

After Carlsbad Caverns, we drove three hours northwest to visit national park #2 for the day, White Sands. David did a great job white knuckling the RV through very curvy roads and a 16 mile decent where some parts were 6 percent grade. We even had an elk cross the street in front of us. After driving through White Sands, we headed to the KOA and then grabbed dinner at a local Mexican restaurant before pool and bed.
