Such a Fine Sight to See
When rolling through Winslow, Arizona, you can’t help but start singing that amazing Eagles song, Take It Easy. While we didn’t stand on any corners, we did roll down Route 66 for a while through Flagstaff before turning north toward the Grand Canyon.
We also made a stop at the Petrified Forest National Park along I-40 where Maggie tried lifting heavy pieces of petrified wood and Megan and a Park Ranger had a detailed discussion about the science behind how the wood becomes petrified.
It was a long day of driving but it was all worth it to see Maggie’s expression when she first saw the majestic beauty of the Grand Canyon from the South Rim. We took a hike along the rim and marveled at the sheer size and depth as well as the multitude of colors in the evening sun.
We also had a close encounter with local wildlife in the form of a large elk that crossed within 3-4 feet of us but paid us no attention. (See photo) And we saw about 100 mules at feeding time getting nourished for their work day tomorrow.
We walked through the famous El Tovar hotel - the original grand hotel built in 1905 when the railroad first came to northern Arizona. After dinner in the El Tovar dining room watching the sunset over the Canyon, Maggie talked her parents into letting her get a dessert - chocolate mousse of course!
